Scoring a “5” or higher is a passing mark for your AP exam essays. As a policy I will ask that all work scored lower than a “6” be redone. You may also redo work that is a 6 or higher, but that is optional. Many teachers and students think of the scale in terms of letter grades (i.e. 5 is a C, 6-7 a B, and 8-9 an A).

If the scoring by the two readers differs by more than one point, the essay is read and adjudicated by the Chief Readers. In holistic scoring, the essay is judged as a whole, and the readers do not separate the response into separate components, awarding a certain number of points for particular aspects of the essay such as focus, organization, language, development, or sentence structure.
